The first tiny home constructed by Capital Region BOCES students recently sold for more than $20,000 during an auction.

The 12′ x 24′ fully insulated custom-built tiny home was sold by Auctions International during the summer for $21,300 after being built by students in the Building Trades and Electrical Trades program on the CTE Career and Technical Education (CTE) – Schoharie Campus. The winning online bid was submitted by the username Jorallin.

The students developed the blueprints, framed, roofed, built and plumbed the structure, as well as ran electrical wiring in it.

 “This project brings it all together for the students,” said Hitchcock. “They started with the blueprints, developed a materials list, worked on framing and roofing, insulation, flooring – everything that goes into home construction.”

Students and graduates agreed.

“I have learned how to frame a house, do a roof and floor supports, frame a shed, basically I have learned everything I need to know to build a house,” said Building Trades graduate Nick Hyatt. 

“It’s a good project because it teaches you a lot about the hip rafters and the framing is pretty advanced,”  added fellow graduate Logan McCabe.

Work on a second tiny home began last school year and will continue this year.
