Fifth and eight graders at Airline Drive Academy were celebrated for their academic achievements during moving-up and graduation ceremonies at the school on June 24.

The celebrations marked new chapters in the students’ lives, some who will be heading to middle school at Airline and others who will be attending high school at Maywood Academy in the fall.

“As our students, your children, leave behind elementary and middle school, they will learn how to navigate the world, become more independent and have the opportunity to make some new choices,” said Principal Barb Lounello to the families, students and staff in attendance. “It has been our pleasure to be by their side, helping them to learn and grow.”

Lounello thanked school staff who are “the heart” of Airline. ”You have taught, encouraged and inspired. “You help shape these young minds and have helped in more ways than I can mention,” she said.

Teachers reflected on their students’ individual journeys, skills and talents, and impact on the school community. Special Education Teacher Dan Darpino spoke about fifth grader Ian Brooks’ love for learning about world history and the Civil Rights movement, conducting research and sharing fun facts.

“Ian has a love for learning. He’s so curious. And it’s wonderful to see,” said Darpino. “My hope is that his sense of curiosity and wonder in the world never leaves him. I know you’re going to keep learning.”

Special Education Teacher Allison Grove praised graduate Gavin Vedder’s ability to learn new skills and praised his helpful nature towards his peers and school staff, and his love for animals.

“Gavin is a fast learner who took on the challenge of learning chess this year and quickly developed his skills and confidence,” she said. “He also has a special gift when it comes to animals. His love for animals shined through in every direction with our therapy dogs. He loves them and they love him.”

After the students received their certificates and diplomas, attendees enjoyed a reception hour where a slideshow was shown and snacks and refreshments were served. The eighth grade graduation took place a few hours afterward, celebrating 12 students for completing middle school.

Grove also had three students who were part of the middle school graduating class. She praised graduate Charlotte Billings for her artistry, creativity, attention to detail and personality.

“Charlotte is incredibly smart. She learned new skills super fast and seems to remember just about everything she learned. And her curiosity and intelligence has helped her grow into a confident and capable young woman,” said Grove. “Charlotte is also known for her great sense of humor. Her quick wit, sarcasm, or funny comments have brought plenty of laughter to our classroom over the years.”

Special Education Teacher Mikayla Joslyn and graduate Elijah Smith bonded over both being new this year to the Airline community. She praised Smith for helping her become a better teacher.

“He brought a unique, vibrant energy to our classroom everyday. I could not think of a better student to share my first year with,” she said. “If I had to describe Eli in three words, it would be impressive, passionate and free.”
