Employers recruit Capital Region BOCES students while expanding students’ cosmetology industry knowledge

Approximately twenty cosmetology industry businesses recruited prospective new employees at the Capital Region BOCES Career & Technical Education Center – Albany Campus on Monday.

The salons, beauty supply industry providers and other entities met with more than 100 area juniors and seniors enrolled in the Career & Technical School’s Cosmetology program on the Albany and Schoharie campuses, recruiting the students and educating them on the opportunities that exist in the industry.

“We just opened a new salon in Saratoga, and we are here today to find people to work there,” said Abbigail Bilow of Latham’s Grit + Grace Salon Boutique. “It’s tough to get people because there are so many options out there.”

Meanwhile Class of 2021 Cosmetology program graduate Katie Earle of Twisted Scissors Salon returned to BOCES to look for new colleagues.

“We are here today to make connections and hire people,” she said of the Burnt Hills Salon owned by Jessica Shults.

Students taking part in the second cosmetology industry-specific career fair hosted by BOCES said they appreciated the opportunities and education it afforded them.

“I am really enjoying the career fair. I am getting a lot of information about salons and what is near me and that will be especially useful if I stay around here when I go to college and work locally,” said Ila Jerabek, a junior in the Cosmetology program from Bethlehem.

“I love this. I am getting to learn a lot about all the options that are out there,” added K’Nari McAdoo, a junior who attends BOCES from the South Colonie Central School District.

Capital Region BOCES works with more than 300 business, union and education partners to help fuel the regional and state economies. Through these partnerships, students can launch careers directly out of high school or land jobs that will help them pay for future educational opportunities.
