Capital Region BOCES will be well represented at NYS SkillsUSA competition

Area high school students ready to compete in statewide work-skills competition

Eighty students from more than a dozen area school districts will represent Capital Region BOCES during a statewide competition next week that tests their abilities in the skilled trades and workplace.

The students, who hail from as diverse districts as Shenendehowa and Cobleskill, Watervliet and Burnt Hills, are competing in events that showcase their work-related skills. The competition is being conducted at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse from April 22-24. Winners from that event will advance to the national SkillsUSA competition in Atlanta in June.

Students compete in everything from demonstrating a knowledge of proper welding techniques to demonstrating how to solve a crime through their crime scene investigatory skills.

CSI team members on the podium
Criminal Justice students—members of the CSI team—pose on the podium at the regional Skills USA competition.

“I am looking forward to going and meeting new people. It will be a lot of fun,” said Marley Wayman, a Criminal Justice program senior from Cobleskill-Richmondville competing in the Criminal Justice Quiz Bowl.’

Technology competition.
“I am absolutely excited to go to the states. If I can do a good spray one more time, I can go to [national SkillsUSA competition] in Atlanta,” he said.

Past competitors said they enjoyed the challenge of competing at a state-wide level.

Class of 2023 Criminal Justice graduate Rhiannon Islip was part of the state champion CSI team.
