Ashley Schwartz hasn’t even started her senior year, but the  Cosmetology Program senior has already completed the majority of the work-based learning (WBL) hours required for graduation.

As of mid-July, the Burnt Hills Ballston Lake (BHBL) High School student has accumulated more than 86 hours at Twisted Scissors Salon in Burnt Hills, while also taking part in the Cosmetology Summer Program at BOCES.

Students in the Cosmetology Program have two years to accrue 125 hours of WBL. The hours are part of the 1,000 they must log to test for the New York State Cosmetology License.

“I enjoy meeting people and learning,” Schwartz said of her ambitious accomplishment.

Schwartz spends her time learning from stylists at the salon, working at the front desk and cleaning up after clients.

“I enjoy the time; I enjoy the program. There is a lot to learn and I like that,” she said.

Teacher Rynee Groat said Schwartz is an “excellent student who is highly focused on meeting her required hours.”

Schwartz said she likes “working with the different textured hair.”

While an excellent cosmetology student, the BHBL teen has a career goal in another field— nursing.

“I have always wanted to be a nurse. I like the idea of helping people,” she said, adding that she plans to also practice cosmetology on the side.

Besides gaining WBL hours at Twisted Scissors, Schwarz is also attending the Cosmetology Summer Program at the Career and Technical education Center – Albany Campus. She is one of about 100 students taking part in the summer session that began last month and continues until July 29.
