Capital Region BOCES is turning on the faucet to new career opportunities for adults looking to reimagine their futures.
A brand-new adult Plumbing Technology will launch in January at the Career and Technical Education Extension Center located at 886 Watervliet-Shaker Road in Albany.
Classes will meet from January to June, Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.
The program will teach students everything from safety protocols, plumbing math and blueprint reading, while working with various piping materials such as plastic and copper.
The 150-hour course covers key plumbing systems such as drain, waste, and vent (DWV) systems, water distribution and the installation of fixtures like sinks, faucets and toilets. The curriculum emphasizes professionalism, plumbing codes and career readiness.
Capital Region BOCES works hand-in-hand with numerous business and union partners, including the UA Local 7 Plumbers and Steamfitters Union, to prepare high school and adult students for lucrative careers.
Scott Nadeau, an organizer with the UA Local 7 Plumbers and Steamfitters Union, said the partnership between BOCES and the union has been mutually beneficial.
“BOCES is a valuable partner for us,” he said. “They provide us with students who are interested in the trades, who want to learn and work, and who have a basic understanding of the fundamentals of the trades.”
At the start of the 2025-26 school year, BOCES launched a a one-year Plumbing Technology program for high school students.
Nearly every graduate of that program found employment in the industry, including Aryn Cinque, a graduate of Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk High School.
He is now an apprentice with UA Local 7 Plumbers and Steamfitters who is employed by Postler & Jaeckle Corp.
“I definitely wasn’t thinking of plumbing as a career. I came to BOCES because I thought it would be good skills to have for my own use. Now, though, it’s my dream job,” he said.
