Maywood Academy celebrates 2026 graduates

Maywood Academy celebrated its 2026 graduating class with a ceremony and reception on June 12. Seven high school seniors were honored for their academic achievements, resilience and the joy they brought to the school community over the years.

Maywood Academy graduate Vincent Malinowski walks down the aisle during the graduation ceremony on June 12.

“Everyone sees you in your cap and gowns and sees your accomplishments, but what they do not see is the 100s of steps that brought you here,” said Principal Gabriele Barbato. “The days you showed up when it was not easy, the challenges you overcame, the times you asked for help, the mistakes you learned from and the moments you kept going when it felt difficult. Every one of those moments was a step.”

The ceremony took place inside the school’s gym. A beautiful graduation cake and refreshments were set up inside the lunchroom, where the graduates, their families and Maywood staff gathered for photos and shared words of encouragement. Maywood Class of 2025 graduate Daireem Tibbs also attended the ceremony to cheer on his peers.

Special Education teachers Catherine Rickert, John Best, Jodie Smith, Kristen Lashway, Roberto Biasiucci, Peter Riley and Michael Montague delivered remarks highlighting their students’ personal milestones, interests, and future goals.

“Thank you for the laughs, hard work and for being you,” said Rickert to graduate Rakisaiah Austin as she reflected on his joyful spirit and love for his family. Rakisaiah will be attending the Skills for Employment, Life and Functional Independence (SELFI)  program in the fall.

Best praised graduate Alexis Bleyman for her kindness and dedication to obtaining her regents diploma. She will be attending SUNY Adirondack in the fall.

Graduate Alexis Bleyman accepts her certificate from her teacher John Best.

“Alexis used her time in my study hall for reading, reviewing course work and completing college applications,” said Best. “The old adage is true that good things happen to good people. Alexis is on the road to success.” Best also praised her exemplary character and work ethic.

This year’s graduating class includes Rakisaiah Austin, Alexis Bleyman, Alexander Bynoe, Andree Davis , Dustin Dudley, Zahir Dozier and Vincent Malinowski.

“As you leave, remember this: Success is only one giant step. More often, it is a series of small steps taken consistently over time. You do not need to have it all figured out. You just need to take the next step and the next one, and the next one,” said Barbato. “Class of 2026, we are incredibly proud of you. Congratulations on all that you’ve achieved. We believe in you, we are cheering for you, and we cannot wait to see what steps you take.”
