January 2024

Service

  • 365 pies baked and delivered in just days—making the holidays happy and in support of students’ spring SkillsUSA competition.
  • Hundreds of area educators join at Tech A-Day for learning on today’s educational technology innovations and applications.
  • Clothing, food and other needed supplies are gathered and donated this holiday season to our community partners and in support of our students.
  • Area seniors get a fresh look as students in our cosmetology program provide free haircuts and styling in service of our community.

Value

  • More than a dozen Careers in Construction Month offerings with industry professionals provide students tools for career success.
  • 85 districts across 7 BOCES—almost 6400 students (!)—served by our Non-Public Textbook team this school year.
  • 80 + area guidance counselors tour our Career & Technical Education center, kicking off the 24-25 recruitment season.
  • 300+ area businesses and organizations support our learners’ skill development through work-based learning tailored to their interests and aspirations.

Excellence 

  • Congrats to our culinary teachers, Paul Dolan, Paul Rother, Chris Snye and Erica Weakley, and communicator Zach Reibert, recognized with commitment awards for their positive contributions to the BOCES community.
  • 50 students from 22 of our component school districts participated in facilitator training, kicking off the second year of our Elevating Student Voices program.
  • Engagement & Development Service team awarded nearly a dozen national school public relations and communication awards for outstanding work in their field.
  • NERIC teammate Virginia Bond honored by NYSCATE for helping transform teaching and learning through technology.

Improvement 

  • BOCES’ Management Services team invested in their professional learning on business management with the Association of School Business Officials of NY.
  • New program is filling the halls with music and inspiring our learners at Airline and Maywood Academy.
  • CTE Schoharie campus construction paves the way for improved learning and new Welding and Metal Fabrication program.
  • $1.25 M state grant to help 90 adult learners train for “green” careers in the offshore wind industry.

Leadership

  • Three new renewable energy courses—launching this winter—light the career pathway for adult learners.
  • 30+ area business and economic development leaders attended BOCES forum on meeting manufacturing workforce needs.
  • Center for Economic Growth partners with Capital Region BOCES to host workforce development and apprenticeship forum for the manufacturing industry.
  • 60+ school facility directors expand their knowledge at the bi-annual School Facilities Management Institute, hosted by our Management Services.
