Capital Region BOCES Special Education teacher Micaela Broderick has been named a 2026 WNYT NewsChannel 13 Top Teacher.
A teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) at Westmere Elementary School in the Guilderland Central School District, Mrs. Broderick works alongside Capital Region BOCES Educational Interpreter Matt Bonacci.
“I have to say I am truly honored,” said Mrs. Broderick. “Our Deaf and Hard of Hearing program has gone through so many changes in the past few years, and I am so proud that it is getting the spotlight and recognition that it deserves. These kids are so special and to see their reactions was just the best, they are the reason I do what I do and come to work everyday!”
Parents of students in Mrs. Broderick’s classroom appreciate her exceptional communication, inclusiveness and genuine care. She keeps families well‑informed about classroom activities, helping them feel confident, safe and connected to their children’s learning experience.
Going above and beyond for her students in countless ways, Mrs. Broderick advocates for their needs, supports their growth and ensures every child feels valued and understood. “Micaela is an extraordinary educator whose work with our Deaf Hard of Hearing (DHH) students reflects the very best of our mission,” said Special Education Director Catie Magil. “Her expertise in deaf education, paired with her unwavering compassion, creates a classroom where students truly thrive. She brings language to life in ways that honor each learner’s individuality and potential.”
Principal John Clausson wholeheartedly agrees. “Micaela’s greatest strength is her ability to connect with the person in front of her. Whether she is working with a student, collaborating with a colleague, or supporting a family, she brings patience, empathy, and genuine care to every interaction. She takes the time to listen, understand, and respond in a way that makes others feel seen and respected.”
Each year, the Capital Region’s local NBC affiliate, NewsChannel 13, receives submissions from its viewers for the Top Teacher recognition series. The yearly program honors 13 teachers and airs their stories during its broadcasts.
Congratulations to Mrs. Broderick on this well-deserved recognition!
