Job Description:
HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE WORKER TRAINEE This is routine manual work requiring physical endurance and a willingness to perform arduous tasks. Highway Maintenance Worker Trainees usually work under continuing supervision or their activities are subject to frequent inspection. The incumbent generally uses hand and power tools to perform the work but is working to obtain a New York State Commercial Driver’s License, Class B. The incumbent does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: Assists in the maintenance or construction of roads, streets, utility and drainage systems by digging and backfilling trenches, spreading asphalt, sand and gravel; Assists in preparation, laying out and maintenance of town properties and areas designated for beautification by clearing, grading, reseeding, weeding and lining; Operates power driven tools and equipment such as but not limited to saws, compressors, drills, mixers, pumps and mowers; Uses hand tools such as shovels, trimmers, forks and rakes in grounds maintenance and beautification work; Loads and unloads trucks and stacks materials and supplies; Acts as flagman on highway work; directs trucks at loading and unloading sites; Assists in erecting or assembling snow fences, barricades, picnic tables and recreation equipment; Performs general clean-up work such as removing debris, raking leaves, cutting grass, and weeds, shoveling snow, and assisting in collection of rubbish and litter from public lands and facilities. Cleans vehicles and buildings; Collects and empties bagged or otherwise contained yard waste into packer trucks; May operate in the capacity of a wing person during snow events; Participates in Commercial Driver’s License theory and on-the-road training. Skills Needed:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and possession of a valid New York State (NYS) Driver’s License Class D, as well as a New York State (NYS) Commercial Driver’s License Class B Permit. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Trainees must maintain their licenses and/or permits and maintain an acceptable driving record during the course of their traineeship.
