Job Description:

An employee in this class does semi-skilled and routine manual work in assisting more skilled employees in completing a variety of tasks connected with the maintenance of a Type 4A sewage treatment facility. Typical work involves assisting in the maintenance and repair of various mechanical systems, building systems and grounds. Miscellaneous minor maintenance work may be performed independently, but does not require the same degree of proficiency and ability as that called for in the more skilled positions. Employees usually work under the immediate supervision of a higher-ranking department employee. Occasionally on less complex jobs, the incumbent may work independently and in some cases oversee the work of subordinate staff. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: • Assists in a wide variety of repairs to mechanical systems typically found in a wastewater treatment facility, including but not limited to pumps, conveyors, screens, dewatering equipment, piping and other pneumatic and hydraulic systems; • Assists in mechanical and electrical maintenance projects; • Assists in plumbing, carpentry and masonry projects; • Assists in installation and repair to electrical fixtures and circuits; • Performs a variety of building and grounds maintenance tasks; • Operates forklifts, ride-on lawnmowers or automotive equipment when assigned; • Performs a variety of cleaning tasks throughout the facility including tank and equipment cleaning; • Performs a variety of minor mechanical and simple plumbing tasks; • Attends mandatory training at the direction of supervisors; • Responds to emergency call-in and must be willing to work emergency and scheduled overtime as required

Skills Needed:

• Good mechanical aptitude and ability to learn additional maintenance skills; • Good physical condition, manual dexterity and ability to climb stairs and work in confined spaces requiring kneeling and crouching; • Ability to acquire a working knowledge of the practices, tools and materials used in the installation, maintenance and repair of various mechanical and electrical systems such as pumps, valves, piping, regulators, etc.; • Ability to stay alert; • Ability to follow instructions; • Ability to work on ladders, scaffolding and in confined spaces and balance under various conditions; • Ability to work in a variety of conditions involving odor and hazardous environments; • Ability to work in varying environments, indoors and outside, and in cramped and awkward positions; • Ability to wear a negative pressure half-face respirator and maintain annual respirator clearance; • Ability to routinely lift up to 50 lb. loads and occasionally 50+ lbs.; • Ability to comply with District safety programs, including confined space and lockout /tag-out procedures

Certification Or Education Required:

Graduation from high school, possession of a high school equivalency diploma, or a high school individual education plan (IEP) diploma; eligibility for and possession of a valid New York State driver’s license at time of appointment and continuously thereafter, AND EITHER: A. One (1) year of experience in assisting with and performing various maintenance tasks at either a wastewater, industrial, or commercial facility; OR, B. One (1) year of experience in landscaping work including operation of zero turn lawnmowers or similar equipment

Hourly Wage:

$20.79 - $22.12
