Two-Year Sequence of Health Careers

Students must complete both years of the program in order to earn a Career and Technical Education endorsement on their high school diploma.
With double-digit job growth projected for both Home Health Aides and Certified Nurse Aides, this program provides an excellent entry point into the healthcare field.
During two years of study, students gain the knowledge, skills, and clinical experience needed to become eligible for certification as both a Home Health Aide (HHA) and Certified Nurse Aide (CNA). Students also earn American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR and First Aid certifications while gaining valuable hands-on experience in area healthcare facilities.
The program sequence is outlined below:
Home Health Aide – Year One
Students gain the knowledge and skills needed to provide supportive care under the supervision of professional nurses in home health settings. Through classroom instruction and supervised clinical training, students learn to perform health-related tasks, including obtaining vital signs, as well as personal care, housekeeping, and other activities that support clients in their homes. Students complete 16 hours of supervised practical training in a lab or assisted living setting, with the remaining required clinical hours completed in a nursing facility. (Students must meet all health and immunization requirements established by the clinical facility.) Upon meeting eligibility requirements, students are prepared to take the New York State Department of Health Home Health Aide (HHA) examination. Successful candidates are entered into the NYSDOH Home Care Registry and are eligible for employment with home health and hospice agencies throughout New York.
Nurse Assistant – Year Two
Students learn to provide total patient care and assist residents with activities of daily living through classroom instruction and supervised clinical experiences in a nursing home. Upon meeting eligibility requirements, students are prepared to take the New York State Department of Health Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) examination administered by Prometric, qualifying them for employment in any New York State nursing home. Students complete all required supervised clinical hours, with nursing home clinical hours earned in Year 1 applied toward Year 2 program requirements.
