Grant Writer (up to .40 FTE) (2 Positions)

Basic Function:

The grant writer works to locate grant funds for which school districts and/or the BOCES is eligible and prepares applications for such grant funds. Performs other duties as directed by the Program Manager.




A.      Graduation from a regionally accredited New York State College or university with a Bachelor’s Degree and one year of experience in grants writing, grants management, grant application review, economic development, marketing, communications, or public policy development; OR,

B.      Graduation from a regionally accredited New York State College or university with an Associate Degree and 2 years of experience as described above.

Vacancies are filled by certified list provided by Albany County Civil Service. Should no certified list be available, candidates appointed to this position will be serving in a provisional appointment in accordance with New York State Civil Service Law. The candidate must successfully complete a competitive examination and be eligible for appointment in accordance with Civil Service Law and the Civil Service Rules for Albany County to obtain a permanent appointment.


1.      Receives input either directly or from school district and/or BOCES personnel concerning priorities for funding.

2.      Researches grant opportunities that fit the school district/BOCES needs.

3.      Determines eligibility for the grant program.

4.      Working with the relevant department(s), researches the information necessary to write grant applications.

5.      Prepares and submits grant applications to funding entities.

6.      Deals with funding entities on follow up material or clarifications as needed.

7.      Prepares interim and close-out reports for funding entities on projects undertaken with grant funds.

8.      Attends meetings and workshops as needed to maintain an appropriate level of awareness of new funding resources.

9.      Presents workshops to school district staff as needed. 

10.   Basic working knowledge of school districts.

11.   Excellent written and verbal communications skills.

12.   Capable of handling multiple assignments simultaneously.

13.   Ability to conduct research necessary to support grant applications in multiple areas of school district operation.

Starting Salary:

$46,568 prorated to the amount of service rendered
