Questions & Answers

The following questions were answered during the August 20 virtual parent meeting.

Q. What is the option for remote learning for an 11th grade P-TECH student?
A. All students enrolled in our Career and Technical School (CTE) or P-TECH programs will be learning in a hybrid model with some academics done remotely. If your child attends career and technical education or our P-Tech program and you have a remote learning request, please contact the building principal. Requests for these programs will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis, as the hands-on learning component of both of these programs is needed to master skills, standards, and competencies to be successful with the course of study.

Q. Where can we get the video of this presentation after the meeting?
A. The video is posted online at https://www.capitalregionboces.org/about-us/reopening-plan/reopening-resources-for-parents-families/

Q. Will you address programs like New Visions that aren’t included on any of those campuses?
A. Yes

Q. Please confirm what campus Cosmetology is held at.
A. At both Albany and Schoharie

Q. Last night I tried the school health screening tool and my son’s location was not on the Mohonasen P-TECH.
A. All sites have since been added to the drop-down list of sites on the health screening tool.

Q. If a student is absent from school for a non-COVID-19 related reason, do we just not complete the health screening tool that day?
A. Correct. You would not need to complete the screening on a day that your child will not attend/is absent. You only need to complete the tool if your child will be attending school on a given day.

Q. My daughter is going to St. Peter’s campus for new visions. I believe temple Israel. I do not see this on location for screening. Will this be added?
A. Yes

Q. Although my son’s school is offering a hybrid, every other day schedule, can he still attend the electrical trades program at the Albany campus everyday?
A. As long as we are able, we will be providing onsite instruction five days per week and students are encouraged to attend each day they have scheduled CTE classes. Ultimately, a student’s schedule is coordinated by the home school.

Q. If my student’s school has him in class only every two days, will he still attend the CTE program daily?
A. As long as we are able, we will be providing on-site instruction five days per week.

Q. Can you explain a little more about how/when the remote learning for the English, Science, and Math courses will occur? Are those the responsibility of the student outside of school hours at home?
A. Some of this coursework is embedded in the CTE program coursework, but a majority of the skills and standards will be covered remotely through the integration teacher’s use of Google Classroom.

Q. My son’s school is not sure about the transportation piece. Any idea on your end about transportation?
A. BOCES does not transport students, and transportation schedules are determined by the student’s home school district. Please contact your home school district’s transportation department.

Q. Has the use of NanoSeptic been looked into for high touch areas in the school?
A. Not at this time, and we are not sure if it is allowable based on the regulations that require green cleaning supplies for schools.

Q. Will students be allowed to use lockers at Albany campus?
A. Students who attend our Career and Technical Schools (all campuses), P-TECH and Pathways programs will have the ability to store programmatic supplies, materials, clothing etc. in lockers and other designated areas, as needed.

Q. My daughter attends Shen which is going two days in person, two days home. Who do I talk to about her option to attend Cosmetology 5 days a week, not just on the days she’s on the Shen campus?
A. The initial conversation should happen with the home school counselor and home school administration. We will be open to accept students five days a week.

Q. Shen schools are doing 2 days on and then off, will my son be penalized for the days not at school as to take the bus to you?
A. No.

Q. If a child has been exposed to covid but does not have symptoms, will they have the ability to remote learn during quarantine?
A. Yes.

Q. What if Ellis doesn’t allow student rotation in the spring? Will you be able to shift them to St. Peters?
A. We are still working on this with Ellis, but would look into the possibility of shifting to St. Peter’s if necessary.

Q. Will the New Visions campuses be available on the drop down menu of the Health Attestation Tool?
A. Yes.

Q. How will the culinary arts program hands-on program be achieved if there is a shutdown?
A. Much like what happened at the end of last school year, instructors will work to create the best possible situation for students to complete hands-on projects at home should a complete shutdown occur.

Q. Is there anything needed for HVAC students such as supplies?
A. For certain programs, students will receive a supply list. Whether students bring supplies or we supply them, students will not be sharing items and supplies.

Q. My son attends BHBL, will he only get the shuttle to the Albany Campus daily or only on the days he’s in person at BHBL?
A. All transportation is coordinated by the home district. Please contact the BHBL transportation department regarding transportation to and from our CTE campuses.

A. All transportation is handled by the home district. Please contact your district transportation department regarding transportation to and from our CTE campuses.

Q. I submitted my email for a request for remote learning weeks ago. I’ve not had any response. When should I expect to hear anything? I need time if a physician’s note is required for the reasons for my request.
A. If you haven’t heard back please contact Jeff Palmer at jeffrey.palmer@neric.org.

Q. Can a senior drive to/from BOCES campus? If yes, where/who do we arrange this with?
A. Yes. Students who plan to drive to the BOCES CTE campus must fill out/submit a permission form. This information was sent to the home district.

Q. If a student drives can they carpool with another student from their high school?
A. If students wish to ride together, it needs to be approved by the home school. This would probably require permission from both the driver and passenger’s parents. However, and again, any approval process is managed by the home school.

Q. Where can the parents get information on how to have a log on for blackboard or google classrooms so we can help students should we go to remote and stay informed for a P-TECH student?
A. We are actively working to create resources for parents/guardians on the technology tools we use during remote instruction. These resources will be shared via our Blackboard communication platform and on the parent and family reopening resource page once they are available.

Q. If a student wants/needs to do virtual learning can the lesson in the classroom be done via live feed?
A. Any request for remote learning should be directed to the building administrator and will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Remote learning for CTE is on a very limited basis and is program-specific.

Q. My son is supposed to take an electrical trade class at Albany’s campus. So can he attend 5 days a week on campus even though he has an alternative schedule at his school where he goes in every other day?
A. As long as we are able, we will be providing on-site instruction five days per week. Students are encouraged to attend each day they have scheduled CTE classes. Ultimately, a student’s schedule is coordinated by the home school.

Q. What is going to happen if the kids are doing hybrid and they go to school two days a week and the rest of the week is virtual with her homeschool. Do they still go to you full-time or do they do virtual classes on the other days?
A. As long as we are able, we will be providing on-site instruction five days per week and students are encouraged to attend each day they have scheduled CTE classes. Ultimately, a student’s schedule is coordinated by the home school.

Q. Just to clarify, if the home school is shut down and transportation is not provided by the home school and the parents can’t drive their child to BOCES, they will not be penalized?
A. That is correct.

Q. If a home district shuts down how would CTE be handled?
A. There are many factors involved with this (what is shut down, length of shut down etc.), so we cannot provide a concrete answer. Know we are working closely with our component school districts to plan for every potential situation. Ideally, if a school district closes and we are open, students will still be able to attend their CTE classes.
