Databases and Instructional Media
NOVEL DATABASES

Gale, Grolier, & a selection of ProQuest databases are provided by the New York State Library. NOVEL is an online virtual library connecting New Yorkers to 21st century information via local libraries statewide. NOVEL is currently supported by a temporary federal grant.

As of July 1, 2017 NOVELNY will add Britannica (three components) and Research in Context from Gale.  

They are not renewing the Scholastic GO Suite, eLibrary and Gannett Newsstand from Proquest.  All of the others are being renewed.

Encyclopedias

Scholastic GO! (formerly Grolier Online), includes the Encyclopedia Americana, Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia, and The New Book of Knowledge. This will no longer be part of NOVEL as of July 1, 2017.  You may purchase Scholastic Go through SLS

Elementary/Middle School Students

eLibrary Elementary -- contains over 140 magazine and books for elementary students.

Kids Infobits -- contains over 100 age-appropriate magazines for grades K-5.

Opposing Viewpoints in Context -- New: Contains a range of perspectives on many important issues, with over 13,000 pro/con viewpoints. Includes a variety of resource types: reference, news, primary sources, multimedia and more.

High School and College Students

General OneFile - A source for news and periodical articles on a wide range of topics: business, computers, current events, economics, education, environmental issues, health care, hobbies, humanities, law, literature and art, politics, science, social science, sports, technology, and many general interest topics.

Academic OneFile - Contains peer-reviewed, full-text articles from the world's leading journals and reference sources

Instructional Media

This service offers resources that correlate with the New York State and Common Core Learning Standards in all content areas. Easy online access is offered for digital streaming videos, as well as for borrowing DVDs, Text Sets, and "Jackdaws".

The Capital Region BOCES Instructional Media Library contains a variety of resources including:

  • DVDs

  • Jackdaws - Collection of Primary Source Documents

  • Text Sets - (Formerly Known As Literature Boxes) - Class sets of books covering a wide variety of topics

  • Streaming Videos

BOCES PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Professional Development Collection from ASCD, ISTE and Corwin for Capital Region BOCES Staff and member libraries.  Print books are available through the School Library System Office.  eBooks are available through Gale Cengage Learning - please contact lacat@neric.org for a username and password.
