SkillsUSA students brighten the holidays for area youth

Capital Region BOCES students played the part of Santa’s elves on Dec. 13 as they delivered a sleigh filled with toys to the City Mission ofstudents pose with the sleigh of toys Schenectady.

The students — members of the SkillsUSA chapter on the Albany campus — collected more than 100 items, ranging from dolls and games to electronics and a fishing pole, from students on the campus.

The SkillsUSA students also collected approximately $900, which was used by students in the BOCES retail program to purchase more toys and games that were also donated to the mission.

While making the deliveries, students volunteered at the mission's Christmas toy store, helping the less fortunate choose toys to give to their children.

"It really opens some of the students' eyes as they learn about a level of need that they may have only heard about," said SkillsUSA advisor Deborah Toy, who oversaw the effort.

She added that it also the most rewarding for the students.

"The feedback we receive from our officers and class representatives is that this is one of the most rewarding volunteer experiences that they participate in," said Toy.

The mission’s toy store assists hundreds of families each year. While there, Capital Region BOCES students stock tables and wrap gifts, in addition to helping families choose gifts for their children.
