Grad profile: Adult learner finds success at CTE

"This is the right place for me." — Casey Washington, 2017 graduate.

Name: Casey Washington

Home District: adult student

CTE Program: Advanced Alternative Energy

Casey Washington came to the Capital Region BOCES Advanced Alternative Energy Program looking for guidance and a career path. He left in June 2017 with both and the new title of future college student.

The adult learner overcame health challenges in his life that limited his abilities in high school. The Advanced Alternative Energy Program was just what the doctor ordered for him to succeed, allowing him to gain knowledge in a small setting using hands-on education.

“There is no other program like this. It’s hands-on so it helped me overcome my challenges,” said Washington.

The quiet, unassuming student said the CTE program taught him the value of hard work and making connections, while providing him the support he needed to learn.

“You always have the help you need right beside you,” he said of the class. "By going to CTE, I have gained valuable work experience and learned how to network and meet new people. The program is pretty amazing."

His favorite project? Building a scale model of a wind turbine, though he said he enjoyed the day-to-day work of problem-solving.

Washington plans to attend Hudson Valley Community College in the fall for the electrical engineering program and aspires to a career as an electrician, either in a union or operating his own company.

"By going to CTE, I am very well-prepared for the next step," Washington said.
