HVAC/R studnetIn the Capital Region and beyond, opportunities abound for HVAC/R technicians, with available jobs outnumbering the number of trained technicians. The HVAC/R program at Capital Region BOCES Career and Technical School provides students with a solid career foundation and the training necessary to directly enter the job market or pursue further education.

Career opportunities for students include service technician, business owner, salesperson, factory representative, maintenance supervisor service manager, specifying engineer, installer and plumber.

  • Job Projections: 15 percent annual growth in new jobs through 2026.
  • Median U.S. Salary: $45,910 per year (in 2016)
  • Education requirements: Because HVAC/R systems are increasingly complex, employers generally prefer applicants with postsecondary education or those who have completed an apprenticeship. Some states and localities require technicians to be licensed.

HVAC/R students learn in a state-of-the-art lab and have the opportunity to test their skills and knowledge at competitions held by SkillsUSA, a national organization of career and technical students. Competitions are held at the local, regional, state and national levels. Successful HVAC/R students have also been awarded scholarships to further their education.

Students completing the HVAC/R program are prepared to test for federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certification, which is required to work in the industry. They also may earn Home Builders Institute and HVAC Excellence certification. Many students continue their education in college.
