HVAC Training & Certification Program for Adult Students now offers internships!

At the Capital Region Career & Technical School

A new 600-hour program offers Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning along with internships!

Adult HVAC studentA new offering from capital Region BOCES Career and Technical School (CTE) offers adult students an opportunity to not only learn the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) trade, but also places them in internships in area businesses.

The 600-hour program the Albany Career & Technical Education (CTE) campus at 1015 Watervliet Shaker Rd. (Career Path) in Colonie offers students the certifications needed to enter the HVAC/R profession. This new 600-hour offering, it also provides them with real-life work training in an area business at a time when career opportunities abound for certified HVAC technicians in our region and beyond.


Units of Study & Certifications earned:

  • OSHA 10-hour Safety Course (intro to OSHA; safety standards; electrical; fall protection; personal protection; scaffolding, stairways and ladders; hand & power tools)
  • HVAC- 200 hours (includes Gas Heat, Oil Heat, Air Conditioning)
  • Electrical - 50 hours
  • Residential Low Pressure Boilers - 100 hours
  • Refrigeration - 90 hours
  • EPA 608 Certification
  • CSST (Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing) Certification
  • Green Awareness Certification

Adult HVAC students

Students also learn:

  • Construction math
  • Job-seeking skills, including resume writing and interviewing


Students also receive:

  • Assistance with finding a job through networking with Career & Techs business partners


Class schedule:

  • To accommodate adult learners busy schedules, classes will meet Monday through Wednesday afternoons from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. from September through June. Internships will be offered during school vacations.

  • HVAC Certification is taught in a 3,150-square-foot, state-of-the art classroom and lab featuring: 
  • A seated instruction area for lecture, reading, writing, problem-solving, and for instruction via technology such as an interactive SmartBoard, LCD projector and video
  • The latest HVAC equipment including:
    • Puron R410A AC systems
    • Condensing gas-fired wall-hung boilers
    • Medium and high-efficiency furnaces
    • Oil-fired boilers
    • Steam boiler
    • Carrier Refrigerant Trainer
    • Indirect-fired water heaters
    • Conventional gas-fired water heaters
    • Air handlers
    • Brazing and soldering equipment and safety gear
    • Equipment and supplies for teaching HVAC Certification
    • PEX tubing
  • Work benches and hands-on learning areas
  • Extracurricular/supplemental literature including trade publications, articles and Web-based resources


The instructor:

Frank Ando has been teaching HVAC at the Capital Region BOCES Career & Technical School since September 1997. He is a New York State Education Department-Certified Teacher of Construction, Industry and Building Maintenance/Heating, Air Conditioning, Refrigeration; holds federal EPA Refrigerant certification; and has completed Building Performance Institute (BPI) Building Analyst training.

Mr. Ando is also experienced in teaching academic subjects - science, math, English - within the context of HVAC. He holds an Associates in Applied Science in Air Conditioning Engineering Technology from SUNY Alfred, and has more than 25 years experience in the HVAC/R field, including teaching, supervision, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, design and sales.

The Capital Region BOCES Career & Technical School offers sufficient and convenient parking. The school is an ADA-accessible facility within walkable distance of CDTA bus stops on Central Avenue. A convenience store, take-out restaurant, deli, pizza parlor and bank are located across the street from the campus.
